Sycamore — 53 qubits
54 qubits fabricated, 53 active. "Quantum supremacy" claimed: 200 seconds against what Google said would take a classical computer 10,000 years. IBM disputed the figure, arguing a well-built classical simulation needs about 2.5 days. Not cryptographically relevant either way — but the machine was real.
Willow — 105 qubits
The first chip to go below threshold: adding qubits made the logical error rate fall instead of rise. Benchmark completed in under 5 minutes against an estimated 1025 classical years.
Google Quantum AI puts a price on your keys
Working with the Ethereum Foundation and Stanford, Google published the cost of breaking 256-bit ECDSA: 1,200–1,450 logical qubits, inside fewer than 500,000 physical, completed in minutes. Earlier estimates had assumed roughly 2,330 logical qubits. The target came halfway to meet the hardware.
⚠️ Why Willow Matters
The biggest obstacle to breaking cryptography was error accumulation. Willow proved it can be overcome. Google now targets a useful error-corrected machine by 2029, and IBM's Blue Jay arrives in 2033 with over 2,000 logical qubits — comfortably past the 1,200–1,450 that Google itself says the break requires. The path is not merely clear. It is scheduled.
