Recovery Phrase
Definition
A recovery phrase (also called seed phrase, mnemonic, or backup phrase) is a sequence of words—typically 12 or 24—that encodes the master seed for a cryptocurrency wallet. This phrase can regenerate all private keys, enabling complete wallet recovery if devices are lost, stolen, or damaged.
Technical Explanation
Recovery phrases follow standards like BIP-39, mapping entropy (128-256 bits) to memorable words from a 2048-word list. The phrase includes a checksum for error detection. When restoring, the phrase is converted back to binary entropy, which seeds the key derivation process to regenerate all addresses and keys.
For post-quantum wallets, recovery phrases must generate quantum-resistant keys. The same entropy that creates classical keys can derive SPHINCS+ and Kyber key pairs through quantum-safe key derivation functions, maintaining backup compatibility while upgrading security.
SynX Relevance
SynX uses a 24-word recovery phrase providing 256 bits of entropy. This single phrase backs up all your quantum-resistant keys—both SPHINCS+ signing keys and Kyber-768 encryption keys. Store it securely, and you can recover your entire wallet on any device.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Where should I store my recovery phrase?
- Offline, in multiple secure locations—never digitally or in cloud storage.
- Can someone steal my funds with just the phrase?
- Yes—anyone with your recovery phrase has complete wallet access. Protect it absolutely.
- Is the SynX recovery phrase compatible with other wallets?
- The format is standard, but other wallets may not derive the same quantum-resistant keys.
