Definition

A view key is a cryptographic key that allows viewing incoming transactions to a wallet without the ability to spend funds. View keys enable read-only wallet access, useful for auditing, accounting, and delegating monitoring without risking fund loss.

Technical Explanation

View keys typically derive from the wallet's master key but provide only decryption capability for transaction outputs, not signing capability. The view key can identify transactions destined for the wallet and decrypt amounts, but cannot create valid spending signatures.

In privacy-focused cryptocurrencies, view keys are essential for proving income while maintaining transaction privacy. They enable selective disclosureโ€”sharing view keys with auditors without revealing spending authority. Post-quantum view keys must use quantum-resistant derivation.
