How Do I Backup a Quantum-Resistant Wallet?
Backing up a quantum-resistant wallet follows the same principles as traditional cryptocurrency wallets, with the recovery phrase (seed phrase) containing all information needed to regenerate quantum-resistant key pairs. Secure storage of this phrase is essentialโit represents complete access to wallet funds.
During wallet creation, the software generates a recovery phrase consisting of 12-24 words from a standardized wordlist. This phrase encodes the entropy used to derive all cryptographic keys, including Kyber-768 key pairs and SPHINCS+ signing keys. Recording this phrase accurately is the backup process.
Physical backup methods are recommended over digital storage. Write the phrase clearly on archival paper, or stamp it onto stainless steel or titanium plates for fire and water resistance. Store in a secure location such as a home safe, bank safety deposit box, or distributed across multiple trusted locations.
Digital storage of recovery phrases introduces attack vectors. Photos can be exfiltrated through malware, cloud storage creates copies outside your control, and any networked device is potentially compromised. The recovery phrase should never exist in digital form after initial display.
Testing backup validity is important. Many wallets allow verification by re-entering the phrase. Alternatively, restore the wallet on a separate device to confirm the phrase successfully regenerates the expected addresses.
Geographic distribution protects against physical disasters. Consider storing backup copies in different locations, potentially with trusted family members or legal representatives, balancing security against accessibility.
SynX wallets using Kyber-768 and SPHINCS+ generate standard recovery phrases compatible with this backup methodology. The quantum-resistant key derivation happens automatically from the seed, requiring no additional backup procedures beyond securing the phrase itself.
