Definition
A blockchain oracle is a service that provides external data to smart contracts. Since blockchains can't access off-chain data, oracles bridge this gap for prices, weather, sports scores, etc. Oracle security is criticalโcompromised data can trigger incorrect contract execution.
Technical Explanation
Oracle types: centralized (single data source), decentralized (multiple sources with aggregation), and compute oracles (off-chain computation). Oracle problem: trusting external data in a trustless system. Solutions: staking, reputation, and multi-source verification.
