Qubit

Definition

A qubit (quantum bit) is the fundamental unit of quantum information. Unlike classical bits that are either 0 or 1, qubits exist in superposition of both states simultaneously. Qubits enable quantum computers to explore many solutions in parallel, powering quantum algorithms' advantages.

Technical Explanation

Mathematically, a qubit's state is |ฯˆโŸฉ = ฮฑ|0โŸฉ + ฮฒ|1โŸฉ, where ฮฑ and ฮฒ are complex amplitudes with |ฮฑ|ยฒ + |ฮฒ|ยฒ = 1. Measurement collapses the superposition, yielding 0 with probability |ฮฑ|ยฒ or 1 with probability |ฮฒ|ยฒ. Before measurement, both possibilities exist simultaneously.

Physical implementations include superconducting circuits (IBM, Google), trapped ions (IonQ, Honeywell), photonic systems, and neutral atoms. Each technology has tradeoffs in coherence time, gate fidelity, and scalability. Logical qubits (error-corrected from many physical qubits) are needed for reliable computation. Google's Sycamore ran 53 active qubits in 2019; Willow reached 105 qubits with below-threshold error correction in December 2024; IBM's Condor hit 1,121 physical qubits in December 2023. The best public hardware in mid-2026 is around 2,500 physical qubits โ€” and none of it is fault-tolerant at scale, so nobody has thousands of logical qubits yet.

SynX Relevance

Breaking ECDSA takes only 1,200โ€“1,450 logical qubits running Shor's algorithm โ€” inside fewer than 500,000 physical qubits, finishing in minutes (Google Quantum AI with the Ethereum Foundation and Stanford, March 2026). Current systems are not there yet, but IBM's Blue Jay is scheduled for 2033 with over 2,000 logical qubits. SynX's post-quantum cryptography using Kyber-768 and SPHINCS+ remains secure regardless of qubit countsโ€”the mathematical problems resist quantum speedups.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many qubits break Bitcoin?
Just 1,200โ€“1,450 logical qubits for 256-bit ECDSA, inside fewer than 500,000 physical qubits, completing in minutes (Google Quantum AI, March 2026).
What are logical vs physical qubits?
Physical qubits are noisy hardware; logical qubits are error-corrected abstractions built from many physical qubits. The best public machines in mid-2026 run about 2,500 physical qubits and nobody yet has thousands of logical ones.
When will enough qubits exist?
The roadmap says 2029โ€“2033: IBM Starling in 2029 with ~200 logical qubits, IBM Blue Jay in 2033 with over 2,000 logical qubits across ~100,000 physical.
