How Long Until I Need a Quantum-Resistant Wallet?
The need for a quantum-resistant wallet exists now, not in the future. Nobody knows when; published hardware roadmaps reach the needed scale between 2028 (IonQ, on paper) and 2033 (IBM Blue Jay) - within the holding period of almost every serious crypto position - and the "harvest now, decrypt later" threat means cryptocurrency transactions made today with legacy cryptography are already potentially compromised.
That window is not a guess. It is read straight off the published roadmaps: IBM's Starling arrives in 2029 with roughly 200 logical qubits and 100 million gates, and Blue Jay follows in 2033 with over 2,000 logical qubits on about 100,000 physical qubits. Google targets 2029 as well. NSA CNSA 2.0 sets post-quantum migration deadlines that run out in 2035, and government agencies do not set deadlines for threats they consider distant. Meanwhile the cost of the attack itself has collapsed: Google Quantum AI, with the Ethereum Foundation and Stanford, showed in March 2026 that breaking ECDSA-256 takes only 1,200-1,450 logical qubits inside fewer than 500,000 physical qubits, finishing in minutes.
The harvest timeline is immediate. Adversaries are collecting encrypted data and blockchain transactions now. When quantum computers become capable, this historical data becomes decryptable. Cryptocurrency on blockchain with exposed public keys from years ago becomes stealable.
Asset holding period matters. If you plan to hold cryptocurrency for 5+ years, the quantum threat window becomes significant. Assets intended for long-term storage or generational transfer face the full development arc of quantum computing.
Migration complexity increases under pressure. Moving assets calmly before quantum threats materialize is simpler than emergency migration when quantum capabilities are imminent. Network congestion, exchange availability, and market panic would complicate last-minute transitions.
No downside to early adoption. Using a quantum-resistant wallet today provides current security equivalent to or exceeding ECDSA while adding quantum protection. There is no security penalty for adopting post-quantum cryptography early.
